Joanne's Sunday Perks

Dental Tales of Love, Adventure, and Fun

How frustrating. When you get to a certain age, you feel like everything is falling apart. I thought my hair loss was because I'm not getting any younger. Then my dermatologist politely informed me that my hair was not aging; it was desperately seeking attention. The problem of hair loss is multifactorial, especially for women. I found that I was deficient in iron and magnesium, and one of the medications I take regularly can facilitate hair loss. Other reasons could be deficiency in B-12, zinc, biotin, folate, or protein. My diet is good, but I have a problem absorbing the nutrients I need.

The biggest shock? Once you figure out the cause, the condition is treatable. A primary care physician may be able to help you, but mine referred me to a dermatologist who treats hair loss. The recovery has been slow, but it is working, and the treatment for me is simple and affordable.

The first step was to find a vitamin that contains iron that I could tolerate. I tried several supplements, but they all caused headaches and stomach problems. Then my dermatologist recommended Untangled, a supplement with 100% of the nutrients I need (except magnesium). I can take the supplement without experiencing troubling side effects. The next step was the application of 5 % Minoxidil foam twice a day. I apply it on my problem area only, which is the back of my head. The doctor advised that I avoid the pink bottle of Minoxidil! The product is the same for men and women, and they charge more for products that are specifically aimed at women. I found one I like that costs $23 for a four-month supply. A prescription isn't needed for these items; I ordered them on Amazon.

Unfortunately, for the treatment to work it has to be done forever, but it is a small price to pay to avoid additional hair loss. If you are dealing with this condition, or know someone who is, you are not alone and help is available. Sometimes you just need the right doctor who listens and is willing to investigate.

'The Platinum Bicuspid' now has a professional cover. It is available in paperback, and I plan to release a hardcover edition of my books before the end of the month. After that, I will work on book four. I can't wait to get started. I'm uncertain about the plot, but I have a clear idea of the characters and the circumstances. My stories come to life when I begin to put them on paper. The next novel will take place in Honduras. Has anyone been to Honduras? If so, please tell me about your experience. I will keep you posted on my progress. Please email me at joannehenning@dentalromancenovel.com with any suggestions for future newsletter content. Have a great week! I will write again next Sunday... best wishes, Joanne.

Joanne's Sunday Perks Dental Tales of love, Adventure, and Fun For those of you who’ve been with me through Dental Tales of Love, Adventure, and Fun, this week brings a new milestone. “Faulty Impressions,” the first book in the series, is getting its hardcover release on June 1. As we get close to that date, I wanted to share a small behind‑the‑scenes update and a way you can help the book find its way into more readers’ hands. “Faulty Impressions” is now officially cataloged with the Library...

Joanne's Sunday Perks Dental Tales of Love, Adventure, and Fun I think of the grandfather I never knew on Memorial Day. The only record of his life is a wedding photo, a memorial document from France, where he is buried, a citation from the United States Army, and a street sign that bears his name, placed in his hometown. He died on July 15, 1918, while fighting in WWI, fatally wounded by a high explosive shell. Joseph was 23 years old. He left behind a wife, an infant daughter that he never...

Joanne's Sunday Perks Dental Tales of Love, Adventure, and Fun I tend to assume everyone has already seen my favorite comedies. Last week I watched 'All of Me', a crazy film with Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin. It was laugh out loud funny. After a crazy ritual to transfer a dying woman's soul, a mistake is made and Lily is transferred into the right side of Steve's body. An early Steve Martin film, he shows his comic genius with his physical comedy as he tries to cope with the will of the...
