Joanne's Sunday Perks

Dental Tales of Love, Adventure, and Fun

I tend to assume everyone has already seen my favorite comedies. Last week I watched 'All of Me', a crazy film with Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin. It was laugh out loud funny. After a crazy ritual to transfer a dying woman's soul, a mistake is made and Lily is transferred into the right side of Steve's body. An early Steve Martin film, he shows his comic genius with his physical comedy as he tries to cope with the will of the female side of him. My neighbor hadn't seen the movie. When I recommended it to her, she recorded the movie and enjoyed it with her family soon afterward. I'm so glad I mentioned it to her.

I then asked the question; which movies feature leading men who acted in my favorite comedic roles? This is my list with a brief synopsis:

'Bringing Down the House'. Queen Latifah, a convicted felon, finds herself in the company of an uptight lawyer (Steve Martin).

'Bowfinger'. Steve Martin, a sleezy low budget producer, tries to film a movie, but his famous star (Eddie Murphy) doesn't know he is in the movie. By the way, Steve's plot premise is a horror movie with aliens.

'Foul Play'. Goldie Hawn finds herself in a complicated plot to assassinate the Pope. Chevy Chase is the detective who thinks she is crazy, but cute.

'The Court Jester', with Danny Kaye. Danny is another genius of physical comedy, and this is a classic movie you may not have seen. Danny disguises himself as a court jester to help in a plot to overthrow a tyrannical king.

"Tootsie'. Dustin Hoffman is not known for comedy, but this one is especially funny. He is an out of work actor who lands a role in a daytime soap opera, disguised as a middle-aged woman. Brilliant supporting roles by Bill Murray and Terri Garr.

'Knotting Hill'. Hugh Grant is a lonely bookstore owner with a group of offbeat friends who encounters a famous actress when she walks into his bookstore. His self-deprecating humor and chemistry with this leading lady (Julia Roberts), make this film both funny and endearing.

"Hitch'. Will Smith's matchmaking business is challenged when his client, Kevin James, literally reaches for a star (Amber Valetta).

Because of a misunderstanding, Ginger Rogers believes she is being pursued by a married man.

I hope you will either investigate or revisit some of these comedies. There is nothing like a funny movie to raise your spirits. All of these films have one thing in common; a leading man, who you grow to like, finds himself in an unusual situation that requires quick thinking and bold moves. For those of you who read 'The Platinum Bicuspid' you may recall the handsome and dashing agent Neil Crockett. He is the love interest in my next book, which I intend to start writing very soon. Neil finds himself in a very interesting predicament. Stay tuned. Until next week, best wishes always, Joanne.

Joanne's Sunday Perks Dental Tales of Love, Adventure, and Fun I think of the grandfather I never knew on Memorial Day. The only record of his life is a wedding photo, a memorial document from France, where he is buried, a citation from the United States Army, and a street sign that bears his name, placed in his hometown. He died on July 15, 1918, while fighting in WWI, fatally wounded by a high explosive shell. Joseph was 23 years old. He left behind a wife, an infant daughter that he never...
