Dental Tales of Love, Adventure, and Fun

Does anyone else have a sense of humor like mine? My favorite movies are usually rated two stars, and comedies. They are movies that the critics hate, but I find them amusing. This past week I laughed out loud when I rewatched "Coneheads" with Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtin. The film is from 1983 and features comedians from the "Saturday Night Live" cast. It is a story about an alien couple stranded on earth who must find a way to adapt and live amongst a neighborhood of humans. They purchase a small ranch in Paramus, NJ, and give birth to a daughter who grows and thrives in this environment. The endearing aspect of the film is how their friends and neighbors accept them, though they are obviously different. The supporting cast are well known comedians; Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, David Spade, and Sinbad to name a few. A favorite scene was with Joe Lovitz as a dentist, who didn't seem at all surprised by Dan Aykroyd's pointy teeth, and who happily introduced him to dental bonding.

After the movie I read a few reviews. One described the film as listless, crude, and overall uninspired. Another said it was extreme, bizarre, and a gimmick. So, is there something wrong with my off-beat sense of humor? I was simply looking for entertainment and a few laughs. I think the intellectuals should recognize that some things are just meant to be fun.

Which brings me to this week's recipe, 'Monkey Bread.' It is easy and fun, and though you wouldn't serve it at a fancy dinner party, your kids and grandkids will love it. You will need refrigerated biscuits (ten), 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/8 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1/4 cup melted butter, and vegetable spray. Use a 9-inch round cake pan, grease with the vegetable spray. Combine sugars and cinnamon in a bowl. Melt the butter carefully so it does not burn. Cut each biscuit in half and roll into a ball. Coat with butter, then sugar and cinnamon mixture. Place in the pan, even spacing, then sprinkle the remaining sugar, cinnamon mixture over the top. Follow the directions on the biscuit package and bake. After cooling, invert the cake pan onto a plate and pull apart while slightly warm. DELICIOUS!

Maybe this week you can find a silly movie or make monkey bread or both! We all need a bit of fun in this all too serious world.

Best wishes, and stay warm, until next time ... Joanne

Joanne's Sunday Perks Dental Tales of Love, Adventure, and Fun Does life ever seem like Groundhog Day? Every year the same thing happens; I forget the event, and then without fail on February second, I see it live on TV from Gobbler's Knob in the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. I do not seek it out; it simply appears on the news while I'm having my morning coffee. Does anyone else think the whole thing is crazy? I suspect Punxsutawney Phil does. A sleepy-eyed groundhog awakens to a crowd...

Joanne's Sunday Perks Dental Tales of Love, Adventure, and Fun Do you have a favorite event at the winter Olympics? This year they will be in northern Italy; the opening ceremonies will be February 6, and the games will conclude on February 22. If you enjoy sports, it's a better choice than most programs offered on TV. We may all have memories of Olympics in the past, like the miracle on ice in 1980, or visions of Dorothy Hamill or Scott Hamilton competing in figure skating. But I have had a...
